Coega IDZ investments reach R1.2bn

Building projects in the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) have injected over R1.2bn into the Nelson Mandela Bay construction industry over the past two quarters.

Ten potential special economic zones, at least one in each province, had been identified and would be subjected to feasibility studies in the coming months, Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies said in Parliament Friday.

Coega gets second manganese plant

The Coega Development Corporation has announced that a second manganese smelter is to be built at the Coega Industrial Development Zone near Port Elizabeth, to supply China, the world’s biggest steel market.

Coega project boost for Eastern Cape

The Eastern Cape will get a R2,7bn a year boost with the construction of a R4,2bn manganese smelter in the Coega industrial development zone, but much of the benefit will be limited to the Nelson Mandela Bay metro area.

PetroSA's controversial R78-billion Mthombo refinery, planned for the Coega industrial development zone near Port Elizabeth, will create no more than 2500 permanent refinery jobs once it is operational, a far cry from the 27500 President Jacob Zuma envisaged.

On the face of it, the R39bn oil refinery that state corporation PetroSA plans to build at the Coega industrial development zone outside Port Elizabeth will bring much-needed additional refining capacity to an industry straining to provide growing demand for liquid fuel
