A budget of R300m has been earmarked for the metropolitan police this financial year.
The metropolitan police concept is relatively new in SA, but councils and citizens have heaped praise on it because of its visible policing aspect.
The Pretoria council said 492 members have completed their training, and will participate in demonstrations and exhibitions next Saturday.
Another 90 officers will have completed their training by June, says Wiek Alberts, the strategic executive officer for community safety.
Alberts says the new metropolitan police will work to complement the SA Police Service, although they will concentrate more on by law enforcement, the area of car licensing and general crime prevention.
