Mall of Africa, is celebrating its second year of sensational success. This splendid super-regional shopping centre first opened on 28 April 2016, and has grown in popularity, performance and profile since then.

The mall – the jewel in the portfolio of its owner JSE-listed property fund Attacq – in its first 11 months of trading saw more than R3 billion in sales and 13 million people, and these figures have only continued to climb. This is thanks in part to the extensive retail mix on offer and a variety of ingenious activations designed to enthral and entice.

Visitors to Mall of Africa increased by 9% year-on-year for December 2017, while in January this year the number of visits to the mall grew by 4%. February and March experienced impressive increases of increase of 8% and 11% respectively, while Easter Friday performed exceptionally well with 10% more shoppers visiting Mall of Africa compared to the previous year.

Its upward performance trajectory is also clear in its sales figures. Increases in turnover for the Mall of Africa were as impressive with a 10.49% year-on-year for December 2017. January boasted an increase of 6%, jumping up to 12.84% for February, and a 21% increase for March. And, while women’s wear showed a 6% increase for February, menswear showed a massive 20% increase in turnover.

Attacq-Group-Head-of-Asset-Management-in-retail--Michael-ClampettMichael Clampett, Head of Asset Management in retail for the Attacq Group, points out: “The increase in foot traffic and turnover can also be attributed to a number of new additions to the mall. Over the past six months, a host of international and local powerhouse retailers, restaurant groups and speciality stores have come to call Mall of Africa home. Eighteen new stores opened at the mall, which also completed four strategic relocations, all of which were ready in time for the December trade.  These movements contributed to the mall’s overall growth of 10.49% for December 2017.”

These new additions to the mall include luxury brands like Michael Kors, Emporio Armani, Tommy Hilfiger and Levinson’s, while fashion favourites Superdry, Hurley, Ramsey, Refinery, The Fix and Heely’s have also been added to the mix.

Mall of Africa also boasts two new restaurants - Mad NoMad and Tashas, as well as speciality stores like Bargain Books, Toys R Us, Babies R Us, Hatfield Flowers, Maverick & Jane and Tip Top Tailors.

In addition, a key objective for the mall’s marketing team was positioning the centre as “Where Africa meets the World – the true Home of Africa’s luxury”.

Mall-of-Africa2“Mall of Africa identified and built partnerships with brands that we felt were in line with this and, through these ongoing and successful partnerships, we have been able to bring a number of very successful events to the mall,” explains Clampett.

In partnership with the Julie Miller Investment Art Institute, the Mall of Africa is currently hosting Africa’s Art Collective; Seasons. This collective, which runs from 6 April and ends on 29 April, is the largest of its kind in South Africa with over 400 art pieces on display, and due to its success, it is expected to become a regular event in future.

The National Antiques and Decorative Arts Faire (NAADA) will also be returning to Mall of Africa in July 2018 for the second time, as part of a three-year deal with the mall as the exclusive venue for the event. The fair attracts collectors, dealers with its vast array or goods and knowledgeable staff, showcasing the best of old South African Classic art and décor, and is a must-visit on the calendar of many South Africans.

Interior-view-of-mall-of-africaMall of Africa has also focused on hosting unmissable and unforgettable summer holiday events. In a first of its kind in December 2016, the mall’s Fantasy of Lights featured more than 250,000 lights and 40 fairy scenes, and attracted more than 32,000 people to its outdoor theatre in a single month. Then, in December 2017, Mall of Africa installed a beach theme in Waterfall Park for the festive season, providing hours of entertainment for young and old with waterslides, volleyball, a mechanical surfboard and paddle boats. It attracted a whopping 17,000 people over 15 days.

Mall of Africa also hosted African Fashion International Week - the highpoint of the South African Luxury Fashion Calendar, and one they will be hosting again this year.

And, as its growing shopper base has come to expect, there is plenty of the cards to delight visitors during its second anniversary festivities.

Town-squareIn celebration of Mall of Africa’s second birthday, shoppers will be treated to free parking on Friday 27 April, giving them more time to enjoy the rhythm of the African drummers and face painters in the Crystal Court. Fun is also on the cards for the youngsters in the Jungle Play Park in the Food Court and at the Dancing Shongololo in Town Square, with face painters and balloon art sculptors keeping the little ones occupied.

“Mall of Africa has come to be recognised as a premium destination, and it is a privilege for us to be celebrating yet another milestone with a property that is so close to our own heart. We are certain that the mall will continue to grow and flourish, building its reputation as the Southern hemisphere’s ultimate retail powerhouse,” Clampett concludes.
