Mall Security, Newsletter Issue 79 Introduction

Mall Security

The spate of mall robberies in Gauteng, 11 since 13 August 2014 brings to question the ability of mall security to pre-empt and prevent mall attacks. Security detail should encompass preventive measures as much as the emphasis is on CCTVs to capture perpetrators after the fact. Police visibility need to improve to discourage robberies, not only in the 12 shopping malls that have been identified as high risk, but throughout South Africa.

Perhaps retail needs to introduce innovative ways to bring police to the malls. There is a saying that goes "never rob a bank across from a diner that has the best doughnuts."

Malls should foster security partnerships with police to leverage off intelligence.
