Pan Africa Shopping Centre supports local community project

15 Jul 2010 - eProp - PSC

Intro
Alexandra’s Pan Africa Shopping Centre has pledged its support to Alexandra-based MaAfrika Tikkun’s community outreach efforts by hosting a birthday bash every month for the orphaned and vulnerable children at the Phuthaditjaba Community Centre

The popular landmark shopping centre is putting its weight behind local community upliftment innitiatives.  “This is one of the ways in which we hope to give back to the community in a meaningful and regular manner. The parties promise to be fun and provide some upliftment for these children who attend the centre’s homework programme and other social support activities,” says Nkosinathi Mayisela, Centre Manager of Pan Africa Shopping Centre.

“We hope that, through our monthly birthday parties, that each child will enjoy one day where they are made to feel extra special during their birthday month, instead of letting their birthdays past unnoticed,” explains Mayisela.

MaAfrika Tikkun’s partnership with prominent community leaders and the board of the Phuthaditjaba Luncheon Club, led to the building of the Phuthaditjaba Community Centre on the site owned by the Luncheon Club.  This community centre has proved invaluable to the community, offering a haven for the young and elderly.

“The centre offers a day clinic, as well as recreational and educational activities for over 200 children daily, and also feeds 200 elderly residents. It provides skills training and includes a library, feeding kitchen, computer centre, sewing room and an administration block where the home-based caregiver programme is managed,” says MaAfrika Tikkun Marketing Manager, Amanda Blankfield.

Pan Africa Shopping Centre has already brought Alexandra its very own shopping choice and convenience, superbly located at the heart of the area’s iconic transport and retail node. Now it plans to use its resources to bring even more positive opportunities to Alexandra.

Pan Africa Shopping Centre’s birthday parties will bring cheer to the children at the Phuthaditjaba Community Centre, and will also provide an initiative in which retailers at the mall can get involved in supporting the community.

The centre has also ensured that Alexandra has become home to South Africa’s first fully-integrated shopping mall and taxi facility. Pan Africa Shopping Centre boasts a comprehensive retail and taxi node including a super-efficient 50,000sqm taxi rank, three-level holding facility for taxis, public parking and structured informal trading.

Alexandra township lies less than 5km east of the Sandton CBD, South Africa's financial hub and Pan Africa Shopping Centre is located at the gateway to Alexandra - on the corner of 3rd Ave and Watt St in one of Alexandra's busiest areas with some 10,000 people and 1,500 operating taxis using the area daily, from Louis Botha Avenue, central Jo’burg, Sandton and in fact, anywhere in South Africa and Africa.
